I am always late on holiday decorating. Like, I get my Valentine’s Day decorations out on February 11 and then take them down around Easter.

I’m trying to get better about it this year but it’s been a little hit and miss. However I have had this one out for the 4th but better too early than too late… {or never}… right?

This is so fast and easy, if you get on this now you’ll have a great decoration up in time for fireworks!

Start by picking up a 2×4 at your local hardware store. I had mine cut in half cause I have a small car but you could also have them cut it down to measurements for you.

How to make an American Flag out of Wood:

They are very kind about this and I always give ‘em a couple bucks. So your cuts will be:

  • 2- 7” pieces
  • 4-3 ½” pieces

A 2×4 plank is usually long enough for two of these, so be a doll and make one for whoever you’re celebrating the 4th  with.

A 2×4 is really 1 ½ by 3 ½ so your 3 ½ cuts will be squares.

So here’s your stack of 6 blocks.IMG_9257

Keep the big ones on the bottom and stack the little ones on top like this. Except you’ll be smart and  turn your raw edges to the outside. I sanded off all the rough edges at this point.

Except for this one. I wanted it rustic but not too rough and ragged.  IMG_9260

Now for the painting.

I like it a little on the dusty muted side so I picked Americana’s Buttermilk, and  Apple Barrel’s Barn Red, and True Navy mixed with Gray.

If you like brighter truer colors it would look  great with colors like Americana’s Primary Red and True Blue.

I did one {not so perfect} coat and I like   how it turned out a little uneven.

At this point you can go more rustic by sanding a few spots and rubbing in some stain with a rag, or go   brighter by adding another coat of paint.

I have never been able to draw a good star so I used Word clip art and printed it out on the back of a   shimmery off white piece of scrapbook paper.

It’s about 3” Cut it out and Mod Podge it to the middle of   one of the blue blocks.

Finish it off with strip of burlap {or colored ribbon} tied in a bow at the top.   Not counting drying time this takes about 30 minutes, so there’s no excuse for you not to be decorated!   Have a Happy 4th!

Hope you love your wood American flag!!!
